Buddy's Candle by Dr. Bernie S. Siegel
I have to wipe the tears away to write this section. I just finished reading Dr. Bernie S. Siegel's Buddy's Candle - For anyone who has ever lost a loved one - what an amazing little book about a boy and a dog with cancer and their connection. It's a heartwarming story that helps all of us (children especially) deal with death and grief. What better than a loyal canine friend to remind us to live each day to the fullest and find joy in the little things. It's beautifully illustrated by Mari Gayatri Stein.
Everyone must be well acquainted with its author, Dr. Bernie S. Siegel. He was president of the American Holistic Medicine Association and retired in 1989 to travel the world speaking to patients and their caregivers. He has touched so many lives through his work and his books (my favorite Love, Medicine & Miracles was published in 1985 and quickly became a best seller helping millions of readers find a healthier, happier life).
I particularly enjoyed his dedication in this little book: "This book is dedicated to all the beloved creatures, present and past, who have shared their love and wisdom with us, while asking for nothing in return but to be a part of our family. And we are family, all the same color inside. A special thanks to my human teachers; my wife, our children, grandchildren and the animals who have graced our lives over the years. It is no accident that a lifetime is three fourths feline and God spelled backwards is Dog."
Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home: And Other Unexplained Powers of Animals by Rupert Sheldrake
Since my first psychic experiences were with animals, I have always been excited about books that discuss animals and their amazing abilities. I hope you will read this book, and through the insights gleaned, gain a new respect for your animal companions.
From the back cover: "Rupert Sheldrake studied natural sciences at Cambridge and philosophy at Harvard, took a Ph.D. in biochemistry at Cambridge, and was a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge. The author of several books and more than fifty scientific papers, he lives in London." Also, "With a scientist's mind and an animal lover's compassion, world-renowned biologist Rupert Sheldrake presents a groundbreaking exploration of animal behavior that will profoundly change the way we think about animals - and ourselves."
Dominion: The Power of Man, the Suffering of Animals, and the Call to Mercy by Matthew Scully
As most of you know, I have worked with and for animals my entire life, and I continue to hope that one day they (all animals) will get the respect they deserve. We are just learning of the magic of some animals (dogs who can sniff out skin cancer, predict seizures, etc.), and there will be more discoveries in the years to come. As I was reading the newsletter, Animal Guardian, created by the Doris Day Animal League and the Doris Day Animal Foundation, they discussed a best-seller entitled Dominion: The Power of Man, the Suffering of Animals and the Call to Mercy, by Matthew Scully. I have not yet read this book, but it certainly sounds interesting and informative. Whether you consider yourself an animal person, an animal activist or an animal welfare worker, this book would be a fascinating read for you. The author describes the book as a "moral inquiry into the treatment of animals" - and I am certain everyone will be touched by this book. Please share your insights with me if you choose to read it.

The Smile of a Dolphin, Remarkable Accounts of Animal Emotions edited by Marc Bekoff
An extraordinary, lavishly illustrated book, The Smile of a Dolphin, Remarkable Accounts of Animal Emotions, edited by Marc Bekoff, shares many personal stories from scientists who have devoted their lives to studying animals. There are stories about dwarf mongooses, dogs, birds, iguanas, whales, giraffes, and many other species. The controversial question of whether or not animals have emotions is addressed in an articulate, balanced manner. These scientists offer convincing, compassionate, and realistic evidence of the rich emotional lives of a broad range of species.
