Question
My beautiful cat died recently. She had been my friend for a very long time. What can I do to help her transition and say goodbye? I miss her.
Answer
A wonderful question and very appropriate today. My wonderful cat, Shasta, died several weeks ago. She had shared our lives for 15 years and we certainly miss her. She died very quickly with heart problems. And, my friend's dog, Jazz, died last weekend. It is very difficult to say goodbye and to feel you've done all you could to support and help with their transition. My belief is that most animals die with great acceptance of the process and make their transition quite easily. Occasionally, as was the case with Shasta, the animal stays with the physical body through burial or, in her case, cremation. I didn't feel her spirit completely released until her ashes were returned to our home and she felt all was complete. In general, all you need to do is put a light around what you "see" as their physical body, give them permission to go back to spirit, and accept your own grief. I also feel it's important for most people to light a candle or share another personal ritual at the time of passing - simply create your own ritual and make it as simple or as complicated as you feel is important. You must remember that it can take some time to work through the grief so be patient with yourself. I send you my love and support.
